Nature and Scope

As a part of the Strategic Service Unit of Housing, Employment & Newcomer Services at the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region, the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Programs provides support to individuals wishing to pursue employment and apprenticeship in the sectors of Home Renovation/Carpentry or Horticulture Technician. The Director is responsible for the overall management, leadership, and on-site operations of the programs in order to achieve all targeted goals. The Director is responsible for the day-to-day operational activities of the programs and the direct supervision of staff. To meet the Y’s mission, vision and values, the Director will ensure excellent customer service, responsible fiscal and human resources management, community leadership and achievement of all strategic outcomes.

 

Some of the tasks of this position include:

  • Ensure that high standards of service delivery and all contractual obligations are met and/or exceeded
  • Establish and maintain regular and effective communication with the community and represent the Y’s mission and vision throughout the project to clients and stakeholders
  • Ensure the successful development and evaluation of materials and program deliverables
  • Promote and market the program to the community
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate procedures for operating the project within the guidelines set out by the Association policies and contractual obligations
  • Ensure program participants’ satisfaction; ensure employability, efficiency, effectiveness, follow-up, and outcomes are meeting contractual obligations
  • Ensure that data is gathered and reported on to provide timely statistical information regarding services, gaps, and trends
  • Ensure that the daily operation of the project is functioning properly, including the computer system, phone system, and property management
  • Ensure the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and performance reviews of staff follow and adhere to Y Personnel Policies
  • Provide leadership to staff in order to meet the strategic goals of the funded program, and provide support and direction in complex situations
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and maintain other methods of good staff communication, including regular individual meetings with staff
  • Recommend project budgets and control financial activity within the guidelines established by negotiated contracts/contribution agreements
  • Develop a strategic plan to maximize service delivery within budget
  • Maintain a safe working environment and communicate all issues to appropriate persons with Health & Safety and Employment Standards legislation in mind
  • Demonstrate commitment to Y values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility within the work environment, and when interacting with others within the community
  • Oversee other projects and staff, as required
  • Assist with Association philanthropy initiatives

Qualifications

  • Fluent in English, oral, and written is essential
  • Post-secondary education, or equivalent experience in a related field
  • Demonstrated 2-4 years of program management experience and leadership
  • Expertise in a related program area; knowledge of skilled trades and apprenticeship
  • Proven leadership and senior-level of judgment
  • Extensive contacts in the community
  • Ability to negotiate and work with a variety of stakeholders
  • Excellent consultation and business analytical skills
  • Superior problem-solving and creative skills
  • Experience in budget oversight, financial management
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities
  • Ability to work with clients and staff with diverse needs, backgrounds, and skills
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite

 

Requirements 

  • Access to transportation with local travel
  • Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
  • Must provide a Criminal Reference Check, not older than 6 months, as per Association policy
  • Annually all staff must complete the mandatory training for the Protecting Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Persons, and submit the certificate of completion
